Aphathy in the face of destruction

The world only begains to respond to certain crises only after the media begins to focus on certain stories, particulary those with touching photos of emaciated malnourished children.  Why is it that some events only get attention when it is too late to stop the destruction?  Have we become a society of people too selfish to care about the needs of others or are we simply just an apathtic generation?  Can we stop this spiral of ignorance?

I agree with you. There are so many disasturous events that occur all around the world that only come to peoples attention once its too late or it begins to affect them in somehow. I think that the reason why is maybe partly because some people are apathetic but thats probaly because people who do know about these things are not bringing enough attention to it but then again ignorance is no excuse. Also it seems that not many people care about something until the media brings it up e.g poverty in africa, war in lebanon, iraq, palestine etc and its only then that people start to care and give support and money. ..but then once the media hypes gone, so does societys concern...why?  Hmm [^o)]

Is the reason that we ignore things because it emotionally hurts us to watch it and to protect our own psyches, we choose to ignore things that we bother us the most.  Or have we become numb to the world's problems because we see so much of it?

I don't think that the world will only pay attention to devastations if they see rampant poverty or disease. It's more like we can't possibly know what's going on in the world without the media. Without the media, would the western world know about Darfur? Nuclear weapons in North Korea? Instead, I think that the media is only helping us open our eyes. I really have faith in humanity, and I think that once people have the information, then they are more than willing to help. Think of the tsunami in Southeast Asia. Once people knew of the devastation because of the media, people came to their rescue.

I was talking to my friend who was distressed over the amount of indifference towards victims of Katrina. She had been to relief centers in New Orleans about 2 or 3 times in the past year. However, when she tried to pull connections with a university in the region, there was talk of "if they wanted to help with the victims, the unversity would have done so already."

Why is it that many people are unwilling to help people in our own nation who suffered from a natural disaster?

I agree with you  priscilla that the media is the only connection to each other but i need to point out that the media some times misuses the information they receive and deliver it to the public the way it suites them most...in a global world where the internet, telephone and cable connects us to each other world wide….we notice the conflict of interest between countries and even within countries…opposite directions and views over the same topic….the public is now confused which one to believe... "United we stand - Divided we fall" this is the problem of our world nowadays; we are divided even upon topics that affect and touch all man kind; crimes against humanity.

Again, some news are a bit to late, the media is more into the consumption…the marketing and money making segments…the people lost the sense of responsibility and became cold hearted...no one wants to be bothered with bad news…people are over occupied with their own life…they switch on the TV to watch movie, listen to music or turn on fashion TV…it is a shame!!!
